THE EXQUISITE CORPSE PROJECT – ANNAPOLIS FILM FESTIVAL PREVIEW

As the Annapolis Film Festival approaches (buy tickets here) I couldn’t be more excited to share with you some of my favorite films featured in the festival.  Hopefully you can use this as a guide to help you decide which films to see or to keep your eye out for.  There is no better place to start than the film that I am most excited to share, The Exquisite Corpse Project.

Here is the basic premise of The Exquisite Corpse Project:

Filmmaker Ben Popik, of the comedy group Olde English, has only a few short months until he is moving to Belize.  He always wanted to make a feature-length film but with such a short time frame he has decided to roundup all of his comedy writer friends, who have been growing apart over the years, for a special project.  Each of them has been challenged to write fifteen minutes of a movie, after having read only the previous five pages of the script that the previous writer has provided.

What we, the audience, are treated to isn’t just the finished project, which is just as crazy as you might expect it would be, but is ultimately a hilarious portrayal of all the drama and fun that can go into any creative project.  Each segment of the film tells us more about the author, their individual interests, and how they interact as a group.  Meanwhile, the documentary aspect of the film, featuring the different writers discussing their work, adapts to fit each writer’s personality and hilariously update the film like a director’s commentary.

To say more would be to ruin just how far the film goes, but ultimately the film winds up becoming one of the best portraits of the intersection between friendship and creativity.

The Exquisite Corpse Project
is screening at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts on Saturday at 5:30.  I will be moderating a short Q&A afterwards with director Ben Popik and producer Joanna Popik.  Tickets can be purchased online or the day of the event (seats are limited, pass holders get preference).
