Rating System

When reviewing a film or creating a list, it can be nearly impossible to come up with a definable rating for the media being discussed.  That rating can, on one hand, provide for an easily definable definition of quality but, on the other hand, it can also undermine the ideas and concept presented in the write-up.  What does it mean to assign something 1 star? 4 stars?  Is my C+ the same as your B-?

This site has instead opted to utilize it’s own method of grading: REELS.  Sure it might look a lot like the “star” system but… well… that’s because it basically is.  The real difference is what the grades should mean to the reader.  Here is an outline of what each grade means on this site’s scale:

5-stars
5 REELS

While not quite a masterpiece, you’ll be hard pressed to find films of this quality and entertainment. This is a must see in the theater.

4-stars
4 REELS

The flaws in this film aren’t avoidable but that’s not enough to derail the solid thought and entertainment to be had watching it.  You won’t regret paying good money to see this on the silver screen.

3-half-stars
3.5 REELS

This film has a lot of great elements that might not come together in the most satisfying of ways but it succeeds often enough to make it a recommendation to go out and see.

3-stars
3 REELS

There are a number of interesting elements in this film that don’t entirely work but are worth a rental or a bowl of popcorn on your couch.

2-half-stars
2.5 REELS

This film is totally fine and yet forgettable.  If looking for light entertainment, this will do.  Just don’t expect it to linger in your memory too long.

2-stars
2 REELS

This film doesn’t quite meet the average.  It has a few redeeming qualities and won’t offend.

1-half-stars
1.5 REELS

There might an element or two that are redeemable about this film.  Otherwise, avoid this film.

1-stars
1 REEL

This is almost as bad as they get.  If it looks, talks, and smells like a film, that means its a film, right?  We’re not sure.

half-star
0.5 REEL

No.  Just no.  This thing barely resembles anything anyone would call entertainment or a film.  This only deserves to be watched by your worst enemies and even then you might relent.
